The Daily Traditionalist: The Great Schema – DT 062917

Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson joins Sven Longshanks for a new episode of The Daily Traditionalist to talk about the elite Orthodox monks known as the Great Schema. These monks are extreme ascetics, rejecting everything about the material world and spending their time fasting, studying and working the land. By separating themselves from sensory phenomena like this, they are able to see reality more objectively and obtain joy from the simplest of things.

Dr Johnson explains the symbolism on the robes that they wear and tells us some of the history of the order, how its roots go right back into the Old Testament ethno-state of Hebrew Israel. There are de facto orders that have grown from the original at Mount Athos, but all of them are based on shared language and thus shared ethnicity. The Abbots ensure a strict discipline and they are often written of in history as challenging the Bishops for being too materialistic.

This is one tradition that we do not hear much about in the west, but it has remained unchanged for centuries and the monks themselves should be an inspiration to all of us who are trying to forego material desires in order to appreciate the things in life that have spiritual importance.
