Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson looks at the failed attempt at a coup to prevent the oligarchs taking power at the end of the Soviet Union.
On August 19, 1991, eight high ranking communist party members staged an abortive coup in Moscow. It was headed by the vice president Gennady Yanayev, but included Valentin Pavlov, the Prime Minister, Vladimir Kryuchkov, Head of the KGB, Dmitry Yazov, the Minister of Defense, Boris Pugo, the Minister of the Interior, Oleg Baklanov, a leader of the CPSU Central Committee, Vasily Starodubtsev, Chairman of the Peasant Union and finally, Alexander Tizyakov, President of the Association of the State Enterprises.
They sought to stop the sale of Russia to western investors and to restore a new version of the Soviet Union. They didn't want the USSR of Stalin, but rather, sought a Eurasian, National-Bolshevik union in close contact with the Orthodox church and even called on the monarchist movement to help them.
This "Emergency Committee" was meant to hold off a CIA-sponsored liberal coup that was to take over Russia and oust Gorbachev. this is why the latter backed the coup, though not openly. Due to poor planning and lack of an agenda, it collapsed in three days.
Gorbachev's career was finished and Yeltsin then staged a counter-coup that permitted the economic rape of Russia. All Nationalists and Eurasianists were removed from positions of power.
