The Orthodox Nationalist: Free Trade as the Foundation for Liberalism and Globalization – TON 080818

Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson explains why free trade is not really free and how the constitution only serves to protect the State and not the people it is supposed to represent.

Capitalism and free trade were creations of the state. In the 19th century it was the state that paid for the building of canals, the establishment of a merchant fleet and the erection of the first centralized rail system. Acres of land, once belonging to the peasants, were given to the oligarchs for free.  Markets had nothing to do with it. Empires created industry, not the other way around.

Free trade is the foundational ideology of modernity. It is a mindset, a cosmopolitan, faux-intellectual understanding of the world that reduces everything to money and plastic prestige. It’s laws and institutions are as fluid as its currency values. They are illusions. This is based not on production, not on gold, but on the creation of images and fantasies that are then taken by the public as real. Thus, modernism is the result of the hypnotic trance.

When the power in a society is private, the “Constitution” is irrelevant, since it only governs state actions. Yet, the state is now merely a tool of capital. Having secured fictitious personhood, capital's totalitarian control over the western world is protected by the state and globalist entities created by these same elites. The fraud of free trade then, comes down to the fact that governments and international bodies are privatized entities and corporations, protected by the Constitution, and rule without limit. It is all based upon illusion.

The Orthodox Nationalist: The Reign of Emperor St. John III of Nicaea

Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson hosts a podcast on the reign of Emperor St. John III Doukas Vatatzes of Nicaea.

Nicaea was one of two successor states of Byzantium when the Crusaders sacked the city in 1204. The other was Epirus. John III was the second ruler of the Nicaean Empire, and created a prosperous, just and purified version of the Byzantine idea under the harshest of circumstances.

The Latin Crusader states were blatant failures. Unstable, poorly led and deeply divided, they became too dependent on the money from the oligarchs of Venice, Genoa and elsewhere. After the Greeks were driven out of their capital city, they regrouped into two smaller empires that eventually consolidating into Nicaea, retook the city. They could not have done this without the military patience and genius of John III.

John guaranteed all subjects land that could never be taken by debtors. He banned all usury. He controlled the currency; coins used even by his enemies. He banned the importing of western luxury goods and strictly oversaw the morals of the court aristocracy. An intense ascetic, he frowned on any display of personal ostentation while the empire was still in exile and suffering. Out of nothing, John created an empire that was large, powerful, wealthy and just in the face of a tottering Latin presence in Constantinople.

Indeed, John is one of the greatest military and legal figures of the middle ages and the model for all Orthodox monarchs. Stressing Greek nationalism as opposed to Venetian cosmopolitanism, he forced the Jews to go to Islam to find an ally. Allied with both Germany and Bulgaria, John created the foundation for a new, stronger and more pure Byzantine empire that would soon sweep the Venetian interlopers from power.

At this point, anyone who reads the American news media on Russian politics is being wilfully deluded. The fact that the mainstream press is merely one pillar of the leftist ideological juggernaut is now universally proclaimed. No news is actually reported in the normal sense, since the purpose of the press is to promote liberalism and, more specifically, overthrow the Trump administration.

Media psychosis after the Helsinki summit – which was unremarkable otherwise – was simply indescribable. Loathing, contempt and hate for Russia and Trump can be found on every page and in every sentence. That these characters are acting on orders is also beyond debate since most know absolutely nothing about Russian affairs.

Never before has Johnson's Law been more significant. No one really knows anything about Russian affairs in the US, especially the media knighted “Russia experts,” so the press simply prints what it wants to be true, relying on wish fulfilment that, in many cases, was an effective strategy. Nothing is more embarrassing than the “election meddling” claim that the left promoted once the Regime's official candidate wasn't installed as they had been promised. This phenomenon is unprecedented.

So what's the real story? Why has the oligarchy gone to these lengths to protect itself from its own actions? Russia is no longer a major investor in Treasury notes or T-bills. Moscow is dumping them in record numbers, which today has become a global hobby.

Sanctions have been a boon to the Russian economy since it's now almost totally autarkic, precisely as it was before World War I.  The dependence on US currency is long gone and the dollar's days are numbered.

The BRICS summit is in a few days. This is far more significant than the Helsinki photo op. Russia has dumped more than 50 percent of its Treasury notes. The Russian financial sector has been almost totally de-dollarized. War with Russia is the only way out of the depression for the US.

How do we understand the downfall of Russia in 1918?  The first thing to consider is that Russia was doing extremely well at the dawn of the First World War. Her economy was expanding and the peasantry controlled (in one fashion or another) the overwhelming majority of the land and no longer had to pay anything for it.

This was a situation completely unique in the world. It was a traditionalist monarchy that had easily adapted to modernity without losing out economically or morally. It showed that these two things need not be contradictory. Tradition can have the best of both worlds. It showed that modernity is wrong, in that technical advancement is not “progress” as such. It shows that local democracy works, especially when it has a firm religious and national basis. Nicholas' success  is a powerful defense of monarchy.

It is not an exaggeration to say that royal Russia under Tsar St. Nicholas II was the best run and most just state in the world.

Man has a choice: either oligarchy or monarchy. He must choose between the common good, which is freedom and self will, which is bondage. When Tsar Nicholas breathed his last, the Jews forced all humanity to serve their own interests. Whether socialist or capitalist, the ideology is materialist and oligarchic.

To destroy Russia, it was equally necessary to destroy it’s soul, and that's the monarchy. To be a loving family man wasn't just a matter of his personal preference, it was an icon both of political rule and the necessary virtues for all society. It is these virtues precisely, that both capitalism and communism loathe and despise. Modernity is the “killing of the king.”

Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson commemorates the 100 Year anniversary of the martyrdom of Tsar St. Nicholas and his family (July 17 1918)

This is a very special broadcast from Radio Aryan since it deals with the central event of the 20th century and our own era: the murder of Tsar Nicholas II by a group of revolutionary Jews in 1918.

This was the end of the Old Order and the rise of liberalism and Marxism. The Fascist rear-guard attempt to restore a militant version of the old order failed. Today in the west, nationalist politics is de facto banned. Even the criticism of the Jews is illegal in most of Europe.

In many other places has Dr. Johnson spoken of the economic and political success of the tsar, so it will not be covered here. Rather, the context and the symbolic arcana of the act will be the focus.
Rasputin was not an evil man and had no power over the court. Tsar Nicholas was a very competent military commander. Germany was defeating England by 1917. Monarchy was far more committed to social justice than democracy or republicanism. A "free press" just made it possible for Jewish "editors" to slander the royal family. All these facts go against the shibboleths of the age.

Everything the American intellectual thinks they know about Russia and the revolution is wrong. Mostly, it is propaganda taken from the Jewish press and the British government. Today, we live in the "Iron Age" as the rule of the Titans comes crashing down around us.

Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson talks about the moral philosophy of Metropolitan Antony Khrapovitsky (1863-1936) for this week’s podcast.

He was the most significant theologian of the 20th century and the first leader of the post-revolution Russian church in exile.

His mission was to rebuild the truth of Orthodoxy without the monarchy and even without an independent nation to support it. Russians and Orthodox were now forced to rely on themselves and on God's grace. The perversions of the Petrine system forced the cleansing of the church and Antony was the leader, like Ezra or the Maccabees, of the reformation under the worst of circumstances.

His purpose was to explain the moral nature of Christian dogma. These are moral conceptions that are to be lived, not merely words on a page to be memorized and adhered to. These aren't random inventions of ancient ascetics, but the very reformation of human nature after the Fall of Adam almost destroyed it.

This lecture continues and improves upon a previous one on NIkolai Berdyaev back in 2010 which can be found HERE.

Berdyaev's main thesis is that freedom is an aristocratic trait. Mixing persons and classes is pure chaos. It is the lowest form of plebianism that destroys all boundaries.

The personality is qualitative, not quantitative. The “social scientists” of academia, he says, are “all in the power of the Dionysian elements, tormented by demons of chaos; you do not know the person and you do not know freedom.”

Revolutions bring about the total state and the reduction of the person to an ego. This is the primordial darkness of sin. The person becomes part of the mass by force and thus what makes a man a man is destroyed as he says “The spiritual principle is aristocratic, not democratic.”  Democratic thinking is darkness. The aristocratic is the result of the struggle between person and individual. It was the spirit forcing itself away from the static mass. Revolutionary Leftists force everything to be standardized and the person is lost,

Even back then he was talking about the change in the definition of “freedom.” The fact that it is used without referent either to ends or to the subject is shows how vulgar things had become.

“Freedom” for the masses is merely the enslavement to passion. If this is unchecked, then reason is effaced. Freedom is the liberation from chaos and thus, freedom from the passions. “That is why truly philosophical people understood that true liberation involves a struggle of penance, self-discipline and self-restraint.”

When the will is spontaneously empowered, it becomes a slave to its desires. He becomes exhausted by his own irrationality. He spits at the revolutionaries, “You, the “liberators” of man, who unchain the elements, have long to consider the problem of the individual more deeply. Why are there no personalities in your revolutions, why is it given to the destruction of [what seems to be] natural storms? Why do we see the image of a person drowning in the elements about which you sing praises?”

Berdyaev says that the “revolution” they romanticize is nothing more than vulgar nominalism.

Mass apostasy is the new normal. This is the mark of the postmodern age. We're living in the ashes of liberal society. Political action, by itself, is not only incapable of saving anyone, but will bring even a worse evil to power.

We live in the ashes of Protestantism, which is based on the will to power. It is the will of the individual reading what he wants into the “Bible.” Without historical knowledge and radically separate from the context of the writing, how are the ignorant to understand the truth of the Book of Leviticus or Numbers? This is the insanity of our age. This is the enshrining of the ego as god.  

Many of the ancient and early medieval fathers spoke of transgenderism and pornography, but they didn't have the means to express perversions so foreign to their own society. They did not have the vocabulary available to discuss the nature of our days, which far exceed the evils of Sodom, Solomon or Peter the Great. Even the Bolsheviks seem virtuous compared to the liberal capitalist. The Reds ruled the body, capital rules the soul.

The end times are the enshrining of evil as good; it is the inversion of all things. Appearance and fantasy is identical to reality. It is mass psychosis made normal because so many are infected. It is mass zombification.

This podcast is based upon Dr Johnson’s paper ‘Reason as the Male Burden: The Orthodox Church, the Female Nature and the Priesthood’

Orthodox priests must be males. This is primarily because women are less rational and far more changeable than men. Women can certainly use logic as well as anyone else, but reason is not identical to logic. This has nothing to do with intelligence, but rather with emotional regulation.

One of the most pitiable sights is to read Orthodox prelates justifying a male priesthood trying with all their might to avoid offending women. It seems that the “patristic consensus” goes out the window when this issue arises. Without exception, the patristic consensus agrees with the argument presented here. Issues such as economics, usury and women show that the “traditionalists” are mostly for show, and usually aim their patristic rhetoric at basically harmless issues.

In 1981, Archbishop Chrysostom wrote "Women in the Orthodox Church: Brief Comments from a Spiritual Perspective.” The article is an intellectual disaster, a form of toadying that seeks female approval at the expense of church doctrine.

This lecture and its corresponding paper is a patristic and scientific refutation of the equalitarian arguments of the ruling class in general, and Metropolitan Chrysostom in particular.

The philosophy of history by Lev Gumilev is concluded with a more specific look at the ethnos, its units and its manifestation in Khazaria.

The notion that the Mongols were Asians from Northern China who, without any functional economy or literacy, created the world's most deadly war machine is nonsensical. Yet, 99 percent of historians fall for it.

TON has a full podcast on this question, except the most basic issue wasn't resolved. Who the heck were the Mongols then? The answer is they were the successors to the Empire of Great Scythia or Tartary. Marco Polo spoke of the massive urbanizing of southern Siberia in his travels. Only such an economy could create what we call the "Mongol empire." The term "Moghul" and the Greek "Megalo" are all titles of awe and respect: the great ones.

Mongols are not today's Mongolians. Not a single Asian skeleton has been unearthed from the "Mongol era" in Russia to date. This analysis of Great Scythia is a very brief and scattered start to understanding this mysterious empire.

The Orthodox Nationalist: Lev Gumilev and the Theory of Ethnogenesis I – TON 052918

Lev Gumilev (died 1992) is the best known ethnologist of contemporary Russia. An Orthodox anti-communist, he spent much of his life in the GULag. Still, he managed to gain his education and develop the theory of Ethnogenesis that is important in the east, totally unknown in the west.

Part I deals with the fundamentals of the theory in three forms: first, the notion of "Complementarity" among small groups of people, usually tribes before unification into a nation.

Yet that's question begging, since it assumes a nation before it exists. This comes from the most original of his ideas, the "Passionary" (Пассионарность'). This is the fanatic. This is the man who, through some mental short circuit, takes the nation as his end rather than himself. Knowing his work will lead likely to death or persecution, he does it anyway. This is the ultimate cause of the nation.

Finally, the "shock," or an event that alters how men see the world. Often its a lost war, a massive invasion, a loss of independence or a famine. It either rouses a people to action or acts as the final nail in the coffin.

No understanding of ethno-nationalism is possible without understanding Gumilev's conception of these foundations. The nation is just as much a part of the natural world as the oak tree.

Part II will dive deeper into these essential constructs.

Icon of St. Justin next to Homer the Historian. This is at the Great Meteoron Monastery in central Greece where Plato and other giants of Greek thought are depicted as being led by St. Paul and St. Justin to Christ.

Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson looks at the life of St Justin the Philosopher (100-165AD) and the synthesis of Platonism and Stoicism in Christianity for this week’s podcast.

St. Justin was a very early father of the church and a Christian Platonist. For him, it is no coincidence that Plato and the Stoics laid out their doctrines before Christ, since these doctrines were later used to make sense out of Christ's Incarnation.

Plato's final destiny was to pave the European road to Christ. As writers like Solovyev were to claim later, Plato's cosmic problem was to reconcile the Archetypes, the truth,  to the banal life in this world.  Christ bridged this gap, He solved the problem and fixed this abyss between God and man.

The Form of the Good had attached itself to the Form of Man, that is, human nature. This concept, even using Plato's terminology, was the foundation of the Orthodox faith as expressed by the most important of all ecumenical Synods, that of Chalcedon in 431.

Without the Platonic system, however, such doctrine could not have been understood efficiently. Platonism and Stoicism, at the very least, created a usable vocabulary to describe the incarnation.
The founder of this synthesis was St. Justin Martyr (or the Philosopher), who argued that the Old Law was of significant and critical influence over Greek philosophy.
